Mathematics roadmap

How mathematics builds, stage by stage.

Mathematics is cumulative. This roadmap shows how the subject develops from number sense to university coursework, and what each stage carries into the next.

Course sequences vary by school, state and country. Students accelerate, repeat, or take courses in a different order — this is the shape of the mathematics, not a fixed path.

The sequence

Seven stages of mathematical development

Each stage lists what is learned and what it carries forward. Open the linked program for the Think-Nth support at that level.

  1. Foundations

    Number sense, proportional reasoning, and the first move from arithmetic into symbolic work.

    • Fractions, decimals and percents
    • Ratio and proportional reasoning
    • Expressions and equations
    • Integers and the number line

    Weak proportional reasoning shows up years later in slope, rates of change and probability.

  2. Algebra

    Variables become objects to reason about rather than blanks to fill in.

    • Quadratics and factoring

    Algebraic fluency tends to shape how comfortable a student feels in later courses.

  3. Geometry & Representation

    Spatial reasoning, formal argument, and reading relationships from a picture.

    • Coordinate geometry

    Proof is where students first learn that a mathematical claim needs justification.

    Algebra II and trigonometry widen the family of functions a student can handle.

    Students who only memorize function rules here tend to stall at precalculus modelling.

  5. Precalculus

    Functions, modelling and the analytical habits calculus assumes are already in place.

    • Function transformations and composition
    • Trigonometric identities
    • Limits informally
    • Modelling with functions

    Precalculus is preparation, not a topic list — the goal is analytical readiness.

  6. Calculus & Statistics

    Advanced reasoning about change, accumulation, variability and inference.

    • Limits, derivatives, integrals
    • Applications and optimization
    • Distributions and inference
    • AP and IB course support

    In our experience, calculus difficulty is often algebraic and statistics difficulty is often interpretive.

  7. College Mathematics

    University coursework, heavier abstraction, and faster pacing.

    • Calculus I–III

    • Statistics and probability

    Support at this level is as much about structure and workload as it is about content.
