Worked example

Solve 2 sin θ = 1 for 0 ≤ θ < 2π

Most lost marks here are not algebra — they are missed second solutions.

    sinθ=12\sin\theta = \tfrac{1}{2}

    Isolate the trigonometric function first so the unit circle can be used directly.

    θref=π6\theta_{\text{ref}} = \frac{\pi}{6}

    Find the reference angle from the exact-value triangle rather than a calculator.

    sinθ>0quadrants I and II\sin\theta > 0 \Rightarrow \text{quadrants I and II}

    Sign of the ratio decides which quadrants can contain a solution — this is the step usually skipped.

    θ=π6, 5π6\theta = \frac{\pi}{6},\ \frac{5\pi}{6}

    Write every solution inside the stated interval, then check each one back in the original equation.
