Why Algebra II exposes what Algebra I survived

Algebra I can be passed by pattern-matching. Algebra II cannot. Rational equations, function composition and exponential models all require a student to manipulate an expression fluently while keeping track of what the expression means — two demands at once.

A student may factor x² − 5x + 6 perfectly and still not connect the factors to the x-intercepts of the graph. That gap is between procedures and representations, not a need for more factoring drill. We work symbolic, graphical and numerical views of the same object in the same session, because that is the connection the course silently assumes.
