A correct derivative is not evidence of understanding
Students arrive able to differentiate almost anything and unable to say what the derivative represents in the situation in front of them. On the AP exams, that is exactly where points are lost: justification, units, interpretation of a rate, and reading a graph of f′ to describe f.
So the work here is two-sided. We keep algebraic fluency sharp — limits, series manipulation, integration technique — while spending real session time on explaining, in writing, why a conclusion follows. Free-response scoring rewards reasoning that is shown, and that is a teachable skill separate from the mathematics itself.
