Worked example

Find the eigenvalues of a 2×2 matrix

Eigenvalues answer a geometric question: along which directions does this transformation only stretch?

    A=(2112)A = \begin{pmatrix} 2 & 1 \\ 1 & 2 \end{pmatrix}

    Start from the transformation, not the formula — this matrix stretches along one diagonal and compresses along the other.

    det(AλI)=0\det(A - \lambda I) = 0

    Eigenvalues are the scalars that make the transformation singular in some direction.

  3. 3
    (2λ)21=0(2-\lambda)^2 - 1 = 0

    Expand the determinant to get the characteristic polynomial.

  4. 4
    λ=1, 3\lambda = 1,\ 3

    Two real eigenvalues, as expected for a symmetric matrix — a useful sanity check before finding eigenvectors.

Why this matters — Students who picture the transformation stop confusing eigenvalues with entries, and proofs get much easier.
